I read a post out of the Rocky Mountain news called Colorado eighth in suicides and what mattered is that people are having these problems especially so much around here. The article talked about how Colorado ranked 8th on the suicide rate per capita. It also said we got 17th for depression. This is sort of disappointing because Colorado seems more of like a place that's not that depressing. But I guess some people just have that problem. I really didn't expect us to be 8th on suicides because I never really hear about them on the news. I think that it is kind of sad. The article said that about 800 people each year die of suicides. I think that if you start having thoughts of suicide you should go see someone about it. It is a serious problem and same with depression because half the time depression can lead to suicide. I don't know of anyone who actually committed suicide but my friend was on this medicine that helped her acne and she was supposed to drink a certain amount of water every day but she didn't and the whole tie she was on the medicine she was depressed and moody. I wonder who has the highest rate of suicides and why. It is kind o into hear why people committed suicide but it is also very sad. I wish there was a way to stop it but all it usually deals with is peoples personal life. Hopefully people will start thinking it about it more and they will go see someone for help.

I read a post out of the Fischbowl called Fight Hunger While Learning Vocab and it matters that there are organizations like Freerice.com because it really helps starving people all around the world. The article talks about this website called Free Rice ans you can get on and answer vocabulary questions and each one you get right it donates 20 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program. Here is what he said in the article:
- Click on the answer that best defines the word.
- If you get it right, you get a harder word. If wrong, you get an easier word.
- For each word you get right, we donate 20 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program.
Presentation evaluation
On my second presentation I feel that I did better than my first. Everyone said I did well on my presentation and did a good job explaining what matters. I guess that I said "um" too much but I didn't even really notice I was saying it. I was a little nervous but I feel like I knew what I was doing. I think that I should have maybe practiced a little more that way I wouldn't of had to use my notes as much like some people said I did. Also relating the blogs was not as much of a problem this time, and I don't think I used my notes that much. If I were to have to do it again the best thing I could do to make it better is to not be nervous and to practice.

I read an article by Michele Davis called Why are kids failing? and what matters is that kids aren't doing what they can to help their grades in school. The article talked about how Mrs. Davis is giving her students a lot of opportunity's in her class to raise their grades but the kids are slaking. A majority of her student have D's and F's. These students should work harder and follow up on their assignments so that they can do better in class. I think that it is sad that she is giving her students all these opportunity's but the kids aren't doing anything so it's really just hurting their grade more. I can relate this to me because I started off really bad in my English class because I wasn't doing the assignments. It hurt my grade pretty bad because there was so much that I neglected. But when I finally started to do them they really add up and raised my grade. It seems that a lot of people in my class were struggling with their and maybe some still are but if you start to do the assignments it's really not that hard to raise your grade. I can relate this to the world because a lot of people just don't care about school and get bad grades and usually have to repeat that class. Sometimes this can lead to students dropping out of school. I'm sure that it sucks for the teacher too. They probably put a lot of work in their assignments and for the student to just neglect it would kind of suck. Students should just do the best they can on their work and if they need help they should talk too the teacher, but you shouldn't just put it off because you don't feel like it or you don't think that you can do it.

I read a blog called Pocket Texting and Open Phone Tests by Will Richardson and what mattered was how kids are cheating on there tests. This post talked about how a 14 year old boy named Insoo from South Korea who could send texts on his cell phone with out even taking it out of his poket. He would send these texts to get answers on tests and stuff in school. It also talks about a web site that he goes on to that you can post questions, and a few minutes later someone will post an answer. The article said:
The first thing Insoo does after Hakwon [his school] is, of course, turn on the PC. Insoo has a difficult math problem as homework. He posts it up on Naver Knowledge iN, a popular online Q&A service with some 70 million entries. Within about 10 minutes of posting, someone chimes in with a good answer, and Insoo awards him with some “Knowledge Power” points — knowledge-based economy in action among 14-year-olds.I think that this is bad because of how easy it makes it to cheat. A question that Will asked was: Should open phone tests be ok? I say that they should definitely not be ok be cause the kids could just text and get the answers from another kid who already took the test. Then they wouldn't be learning anything. The kids should just study and do good on their own. I can kind of relate this to my social studies class because we switch papers and grade each others quizzes and their has been some cheating where two kids switch the answers for each other if they got it wrong. And I'm sure that that isn't the only class were people cheat. There is always going to be some people who cheat and I think that we should do the most we can to stop it, and open phone tests is probably not helping.

I read a post by Greg Toppo called Town may criminalize online harassment and what mattered to me was that kids should be monitored by their parents or someone else on what their kids are doing on-line. The post talked about how a thirteen year old girl named Megan Meier met a sixteen year old boy on my space and they became good friends. Then he started to make fun of her saying stuff like "nobody likes you" and " your a bad person and everybody hates you". A couple days before her birthday she committed suicide. The article said:
Weeks later, Megan's grieving parents learned that the boy didn't exist — he'd been fabricated by a neighbor, the mother of one of Megan's former friends. The girls had had a falling out, police say, and she wanted to know what Megan was saying about her daughter. This is very sad to me and I think that their neibor should be ashamed of herself. I can see a couple of yougn boys doing this(witch is still horrible) but a grown woman doing this to a young girl because she thought she was saying stuff about her daughter is even worse. That is very immature and I can't believe that she drove that poor girl to committing suicide. It would have been more responsible if her parents were checking on what she was doing on-line because they probably wouldn't have allowed her to speak with the boy in the first place. Maybe she should have told her parents what was going on and they could of done something about it, or she could have just blocked them when they started to make fun of her. This relates to me because I know some people who have met people that they did not know on my space but luckily they didn't get into any trouble with it. This relates to my class because probably everyone in there has a my space account and hopefully they are careful with it and they don't talk to strangers. This can relate to the world because people are always talking to strangers on my space that turn out to be bad people and I think that if you have a my space you should use it wisely because you could get yourself into some big trouble.

I read an article out of the Denver Post called DPS school vote Monday may not close arguments and it talked about how DPS is planning to close 8 of their schools to rework some programs and it matters that parents and even students have the right to vote in this. This is totally unfair to parents and students because the parents of the students might not be able to work out something with taking their kids to another school. It might ruin some students education and they might lose some of their friends from their schools. I don't think that this should happen and if it does they should at least let all the kids finish in that school before closing it. Also a lot of teachers would probably lose their jobs and that would be unfair to them, so the teachers should also have the right to vote on this subject. It said that some people were protesting about this to stop them from shutting down this elementary school and this middle school and I think that's what they should be doing because the district has no right to just close these schools down and just make these parents find a new school. Part of the article said:
Only 68,000 students attend Denver Public Schools, which has room for 100,000 - leaving 30 percent of the classroom space unused. That means that they would take away even more kids out of the district. That probably wouldn't be to good for the district. And i don't really see how the district would make enough money to even stay there if they took out all those schools. So they should let the teachers, parents, and students have a say in what happens to the schools.

I read a post from the Rocky Mountain News called Pellet gun at school leads to lock down and it talked about Chatfield Senior High School going into lock down because a kid had brought a pellet gun inside the school and they thought it was a real gun, and what matters out of this post is that schools are staying safe. I'm glad that this school is being safe because after all the school shootings there have been you have to be cautious. The kid who saw the gun reported it to the school and they immediately put the campus on lock down The boy and his friend who was with him were detained. This is what the post said:
They don't think that the kid pointed it at anyone and they later found out hat it was just a harmless air soft gun that shoots plastic pellets. I don't know what this kid was thinking bringing an air soft gun to school because you can get in big trouble for things like that. He should have known better after all the school shootings you can't just bring a fake gun to school. I mean what if the cops shot at him or something. I can kind of relate to this because one time at my old middle school one girl threatened another girl and she brought a letter opener to school and they found it in her locker. They suspended her from school and she probably went to juvy. This relates to the world because mainly in collages students have brought real guns to school and shot and killed other kids. It is a really good thing that this school took that precaution to lock down the school because some one could have gotten hurt, even though it wasn't a real gun.Deputies responded to the south Jefferson County campus at 11:15 a.m. after a male student saw two teen boys in a car in the parking lot with what looked like a "real gun," said Lynn Setzer, Jefferson County Public Schools spokeswoman.
The boy who saw the gun reported it to school officials who immediately locked down the campus, she said.

I read a post from the rocky mountain news called More than half of Colorado teen drivers text message and what mattered to me was how safe drivers are being especially teens. Part of the article said:
This also kind of relates to drunk driving because people always think that it will be fine until they get into an accident. I think that it should be a law that you cannot use your cellphone while driving and if you get caught you get a fine. Police would probably have to pay closer attention but it would pay off with better drivers and less accidents.
Fifty-one percent of Colorado teen drivers admitted to text messaging and 66 percent said they used their cell phones while drivingThis isn't really that surprising to me because I how much a teenager can become dependent on their cellphones. It is very dangerous for teens to be talking and texting on their cellphones when they are driving. This is one of the the main causes of car accidents and teens always think it can never happen to them, but it does all the time. I can relate to this because my mom talks on her cellphone a lot while she's driving, and my sister does to sometimes but not very much because she is a pretty good driver. It is funny because one time they were doing a story on the news about people who talk on their cellphones while driving and they actually showed my mom for a second talking on her cellphone.
This also kind of relates to drunk driving because people always think that it will be fine until they get into an accident. I think that it should be a law that you cannot use your cellphone while driving and if you get caught you get a fine. I read a post by Paula Góes called Brazil: 5 years old boy dressed as Spiderman saves baby, part of the post stated:
“5-year old boy named Riquelme (named after an Argentine soccer player), rescued a one-year old girl from a terrible fire in a neighboring home, while clothed in a Spiderman outfit. When he saw the fire growing, he yelled, “I'M SPIDERMAN!” and ran into the house and saved the girl”.Because of spider man that kid had enough courage to go in to a fire and save that baby. That's amazing! what matters to me is that kids know how to be safe, because that kid could have been seriously injured because he thought he was spiderman. It is a very thing that he did this but it is very dangerous thing too. This reminds me of a story that I saw in the news a while back and it was about a kid who was at the beach and went into the water to look for Spongebob and he almost drowned. They also almost had to cancel the show so I think that even though kids don't want to hear it, parents need to tell them that they can't be or find these fictional characters. Or at least the parents should keep better track of what their kids are doing.

They all had to do with school and what we should be learning and to me those are important subjects. The next presentation I do I will probably have to practice a lot more, and not focus on my notes during the presentation. Also I don't feel that I was speaking clearly or loud enough. I read a post called Do schools have birth-control role? and it talked about schools here in denver giving away birth control pills, what mattered to me from the article was making good decisions. The article stated:
Health clinics in six Denver high schools should be allowed to dispense birth control and emergency contraceptive pills, according to a new report by a health task force.I think that this is a good and a bad thing. It is bad that they have to hand out birth control pills because you shouldn't be getting pregnant at that age. It is good because it is protecting the girls from ruining their life because they can't take care of a baby. I don't think that you should have sex until you are an adult, but if I were a parent and my daughter was going to make that bad decision than at least she would be able to have protection. The article said that they were even handing them out in middle school. I think that's outrageous that girls are getting pregnant at that age. I don't see any reason why they would even have the chance. I think that they need to do something about it, I don't know what but that is pretty unacceptable if you ask me. I t is good that they are trying to stop the pregnancies with the birth control but those kids need to make better decisions.

I read an article by David Warlick called Parents & Internet-Using Teens and what mattered to me is that kids are being safe on the internet. The article talked about how more parents are looking at what their children are doing on the internet. I think that this is a great thing to do because a lot of kids have a my-space account and are usually naive and don't realize that there are a lot of bad people on my-space and that they could be in trouble if they put down too much information. It said that parents focus on what their kids are looking at and watching rather than the amount of time spent doing that particular thing, and that is also good because teenagers could have access to a lot of things these days. in the article it said 87% of parents of teens get on line to check on what their kids are doing. I can relate to this because my mom is always checking my grades on infinite campus and checking on what I'm doing on the internet and stuff. It can be annoying but I know that it is a good thing. This relates to my English class because we use laptops and the internet a lot. I don't think that my teacher has to worry too much because all of the bad sites are probably blocked. He also mentioned in the article that kids are using the internet as a social network and are finding ways to learn from it. I don't know what I think about that because I don't know how much a kid can learn from my-space or face book. Anyway if your a parent reading this I would make sure your kid isn't doing anything that they shouldn't be because it could lead to bad things.

I read a post by Craig Blog called Allowing Re-Takes To Improve Student Learning and what mattered to me was that teachers make sure students understand what they're teaching them. Thew post talked about how in Craig's biology class he allows his students to come in and re-take tests if they fail them, but he requires that the students come in for a review before re-taking the test. I think that it is great that he allows his students another chance to make sure every one understands it. If ever fail a test or quiz and have a chance to re-take it I always do, because if you fail things like that it can really bring down your grade. In the post he said 55 people were qualified to re-take he test when he first started doing this, and only 3 people came in to do over the test. In my English class my teacher doesn't except late work or re do our tests or anything but she does make sure we have a chance to completely understand the subject. I also think this is a good thing because when I wasn't getting my assignments done and it dropped my grade really low it made me realize that I have to start focusing and getting my things done, not just in that class but in all of my classes. So I think teachers ahould always let you re do tests that you failed or at least give you help to understand it and not just say something like "Next time pay attention and maybe you'll have a better chance of passing the test", not that any of my teachers say that but you get the idea.

I read a post by Mrs. Parsons called Technology- Is it changing the way we teach? and what mattered to me was how much we need to learn and what teachers should be preparing us for. The post talked about how technology is advancing and changing the way we are taught. It also talked about how there is to much knowledge available to us today for the brain to handle. I think that that's not true because we don't have to learn all of it we just need to learn what we have to or want to know. Just because there is a wide variety of things to learn doesn't mean that we have to learn it all. Sometimes I feel like my teachers are trying to make me learn way to many things but once I get my stuff together I realize that it's just a lot of work. Like she said, technology is changing the way we are taught but I think it's a good thing because technology is making it a lot esier to teach us things. Like rather than typing up a whole page of notes and printing it out for every student they can just leave it on the computer and put it on the projector. A question she asked was:
Has technology changed the way we teach, in some ways, but are we as teachers really preparing the students for the 21st century?I see this in a lot of teachers blogs and I think theat they should stop worrying about it. All teachers should be worried about is preparing us for collage. Student should have some of the responsibility. I think that we can prepare our selves for the future, and that it shouldn't be the teacher's responsibility.

In 2005, 71 teenagers died in Colorado from car accidents, 50 of whom were not wearing seat belts.Just recently there was a huge car crash on University and Easter road. Someone drove through a stoplight pole, went through a fence and hit this guy in his back yard. That just shows you that people should be more careful and wear their seat belts. This relates to me in a way because not that long ago my youth group leader from church was telling us about how his best friend died because they were screwing around in their car and his friend tried to pass him and got hit by an oncoming car, flipped over and died. The school was accused of committing felonies by violating the students right to privacy. I think that it's horrible that they looked through those students messages because theses days kids usually put personal things and such in their messages. But if they were cheating and doing drugs then they really brought this on their selves and deserved it, and they said that they did fin some bad stuff on some of the kids phones, the article said:
The administrator then "interrogated" the student about text messages that he found to be "incriminating."Other students were called into the administrator's office based on the text messages that were viewed.I can relate to this because I have friends who say everything through their texts, they probably have a lot of stuff in their that they wouldn't want anyone else to see. There's probably at least one kid on my English class that has a lot of private stuff in their texts. So I think that you should never go through someones phone or anything of theirs without there permission. And maybe kids should just delete texts from their phone if they're personal or bad.

I read an article by David Warlick called More Thoughts On Filtering and what mattered to me was how schools filter their internet. The article was about how schools filter everything on the computers. Like they filter videos and certain searches for pictures and websites. I do understand why they block games and stuff that would distract us like that but sometimes they filter things we need. Like In middle school for reports in science, English, etc. most of the good information websites I found at home were blocked at school. In my English class I haven't come across one filtered website but thats probably because I only have been on the websites my teacher has told us to go on. This relates to me because when I was younger i had an e-mail account but I was to young to go on any of the sites I wanted to because of the age I had put in when I signed up. I just remember I always wanted an adult account, and I think I finally got one when I was 12 or 13. Back to the subject of the schools methods of filtering, I think they should take a little more time doing it. Instead of just blocking a whole search, just go into the search and block some of the things.

In my english class we all comment on each other s blogs and it always helps me , weather it's some advice or just a compliment. In the blog he asks a funny question:

In conclusion I think it's definitely helpful to comment on peoples blogs. So I say when ever you have something good or helpful to say, say it. He also said:

I read a post by James Holman called Math In Life, and it was about what math students should be taught in school and if there going to use anything that they're teaching us. What mattered to me was being prepared for when we are adults and what kind of math we need to know, and that we might just forget all the other stuff we learned that we won't use when we're adults. In part of the post he said:
Should we focus more math on applications like home mortgages, credit card interest, taxes and other things that you might not learn in school?I think leaning some of that would actually help prepare us more for the future because that's mostly what we are going to be doing that's related with math. I can connect to this because in fifth grade we learned how to write checks and do deposits and stuff to prepare us for Ameritown. Witch was a place we went to and ran our own little town with places like the store and the news office and everyone got a job, even being the mayor. But I totally forgot about how to do all that stuff, so maybe schools should put some of those subjects into their curriculum. This relates to my English class because some of the stuff in there we will use like proper writing format and so on. This relates to the world around me because my parents say they don't use most of what they learned in school now in days. Today I read a post by Jeff Utecht called Is Payment For Good Grades Legitimate Motivation In this day and Age?. It was about a debate on comedy central on weather or not to pay kids to motivate them to get good grades. I think it would be cool if my parents payed me for good grades but I don't need to be payed to get good grades, I get them because I personally want to do good in school to get a good job and stuff like that. I know that I'm not going to pay my kids for good grades, and if they aren't doing well then I'll just ground them or something. I think this subject relates to the world in how if you do good in your job or profession you will get payed more. And it re;ates to this class because some people might be getting payed if they get an A. I think kids should earn there money from a job because that teaches them that they have to work for their money, even though school can be hard work sometimes.

Today I was looking through the Fischbowl and i found an interesting article called Is it okay to be a technologically illiterate teacher ?. It was about how everyone, especially educators, should have basic level of technology capability. What mattered to me was what basic things people should know. I don't think everyone should have to know how to use a cell phone or a computer to live a normal life and neither should teachers. I mean would you rather have a Spanish teacher who is very good at the language and can't use a computer, or one who's alright at Spanish but can do anything on computer. Though I definitely can say my english teacher knows her stuff about technology, I mean we use laptops every day in that class and she taught us everything we needed to know about blogger or Google and so on. The post also referenced another post by Terry Freedman dealing with the subject and part of it said:
...and we don't have the moral right to sit placidly on the sidelines when some educators are potentially jeopardizing the chances of our youngsters.I would definitely have to disagree with this because I know more about technology than half the adults I know and the educators wouldn't be jeopardizing our chances because as long as they're teaching us math or history or whatever it might be we should be fine. This relates to the world because I know a bunch of people who are technologically illiterate and all of them are adults but I can't name one kid I know who doesn't know how to use modern technology. I know a lot about technology and if there's is something new then it really doesn't take me that long to figure it out, so I really don't think it's that big of a deal unless it's your profession or something.

Over the weekend i read a post by Karl Fisch called A fundamental Disconnect?. Inthe post he talked about a story he read and listed some high lights from it. The story was about how schools aren't preparing their student for the future and that teachers are too broad with the subjects they're working on. Here's one of the parts of the story he put down:
teachers are covering too many subjects too broadly, when only a few core subjects should be taught and basic skills should be well developed in all students... In terms of assessments, multiple-choice tests rarely ask students to explain their reasoning or apply knowledge to new situations.Personally I would disagree. I think the teachers teach us what we need to know in the subject if we learned every single thing out of a subject we would never get to the next one, or advance in our learning. Back to the teachers not preparing us for the future, I think is wrong because we live in the present not in the past and we're always advancing. Like in this class we're using lap tops and jump drives so I'd say thats pretty advanced. I have agree with what Mr. Fisch said:
I don't believe that all we're about in K-12 is preparing kids for college and to be future employees, but certainly that's part of what we do. And I do think that - at my high school at least - we do a fairly good job at many of the above things.I think that the world is keeping up with technology pretty well and same with me. For example I have one of the latest game systems, and cable and just stuff like that. I think maybe this person should have done some more research before they wrote this story.

Surreal Shanghai Response
I read Surreal Shanghai By Will Richardson. What mattered to me was how they just remove old things and replace them with new ones. It reminded me of how we toke the native Americans land and replaced it rodes and buildings. It reminds me of kids these days because they always have to have the newest game system or toy or stuff like that. This kind of thing goes on everywhere, I'm always seeing new apartment buildings or houses or office buildings. It just seems like they never stop trying to improve.
This relates to our class because of the technology and how were using laptops instead of books and paper, just like in Shanghai How they use LCD screens instead of billboards. It is very amazing how far china has come as far as technology goes. Like how how Will said
"...ships cruise down the river carrying these huge LCD screens that must be like 50 feet wide and 30 feet tall, flashing one advertisement after another for designer clothing or local restaurants and health clubs."

Nata village blog Response
I thought the nata village blog was very interesting. What mattered to me was helping others out in times of need. Like how they provided those people an education, gave the kids new shoes, and the nurses goggles. I thought it was cool that they were learning literacy and things that we are learning in this class. This relates to the world because this is actually what going on in Africa and other places around the world. I am glad that we are helping them out but sometimes it seems like we're helping out other country's more than we are our selves. This relates to me in a smaller scale as in if I am in need of something my friends or my parents will help me. Or if I am helping someone else out like if my parents needed anything or my friend needed some money because he didn't have anything to eat.
